My Goldilocks Search for Images

Sometimes finding the right image or multimedia item is the most time consuming part of posting for me. I hunt through Flickr, I try Compfight, I use Google Image Advanced search and filter. I try YouTube. Apparently my choice of keywords can be lacking.

I guess some of the issue comes from a lot of my topics. I might not always be choosing topics that are concrete enough to search and some days I don’t want to make an image into a meme that would maybe say what I want it to say.

So here’s the question: How do you choose what words you use to search? How do you get to the place where you can find the “just right” image?

Heidie Sauer and I were discussing this on Twitter. Sometimes the issue is just where to start searching. Sometimes it’s what words to use when you are searching. But I would love some tips. I know that being more general is good but how do I determine what that general thing is? Sadly, my posts are rarely about cats. Cats would be easy. Even ferrets would be easy. I feel like I’m often looking for something I should draw myself but… lacking in image software that would produce something I like (Paint, you can shrink and crop my images forever, but I don’t trust you to make them).

Tips? Tricks? Great links?
